Generalized, non-neonatial tetanus is a highly fatal disease in Afghanistan: A case series study

ObjectivesTo describe the clinical features and outcomes of a case series adult tetanus illustrate inadequacies in confronting this preventable disease.Design MethodsThis study retrospectively evaluated 24 relatively severe, confirmed cases tetanus, diagnosed between March 2017 December 2018, Kabul Antani Hospital, Afghanistan.ResultsRegarding source infection: 18 patients (75%) had history injuries, 1 dog bite was an intravenous drug user; 4 no external injuries or wounds. Dysphagia main manifestation for which sought medical treatment (50%). Of 12 who died, 7 presented with confusion seizure, acute kidney injury, 2 pneumonia.ConclusionsMortality due to is high Afghanistan (Case Fatality Rate (CFR) 50%)), suggesting urgent need vaccination policy programs, post-exposure protocols, facilities equipped tetanus. The Ministry Public Health should seek improve accessibility, distribution recording immunization through vaccination.
